Josh Long, Shawn Mears, Gabe Martinez (now living in Florida), Dawn Pulford, Roger Griswold, Kim Hunsaker, Todd Morehead, Christian Johnson, Cosmo Leone, Kevin Brueck, Brent Ruther, Brad Dameron, Tom Rudy, George Van Hagen, Bob Ensminger, Braydon Rudy, Andy Kincaid, Julie Rown, Lori Rudy, Kandy Dameron, Lynda Murray, Richard Link, Carrie Kimpton, Tim Smith, Gary Szymula, Chris Grimm, Ann Lehman, Dave Luers, Norma Cabanas, Christy Fox, Lyle Roberts, David Prickett, Margie Ward, Robin Conrad, John McCormick, Kirt Ormesher, Daphne Pulford, Karen Taylor, Carl Behne, Tony Noll, Jude Langhurst, Shirley Johnson, Richard Johnson.
That's a lot! And many of these folks did multiple events over those four months.
Josh Long continues to run fast. He was 1st place overall in the Nauvoo Grape Stomp 5K on September 1st.
Shawn Mears was 3rd of 15 in the Clydesdales group in the Lake St. Louis Triathlon (Olympic distance) on that same day.
Dawn Pulford qualified for Nationals on September 9 at the NEMO Sprint Triathlon. At that same race, we fielded 5 teams. The 2nd place (of 8) male team consisted of Christian Johnson, Cosmo Leone, and Kevin Brueck. 1:03 behind them, for 3rd place was our team of Brent Ruther, Shawn Mears, and Brad Dameron. We also got 4th! That team included Tom Rudy, George Van Hagen, and Bob Ensminger. The female team of Lori Rudy, Kandy Dameron, and Lynda Murray placed 2nd. The mixed team of Braydon Rudy, Andy Kincaid, and Julie Rowan placed 4th of 18.
Richard Link did something interesting on September 15: The Fever River Adventure Triathlon in Galena. He had to kayak, then bike and run. He came in 7th of 15 in his group. Pretty cool.
Six BEASTS entered the Trihawks Triathlon on September 16. Top performers included Dawn Pulford (3rd of 14 in her group), Carrie Kimpton (4th of 27 in hers), Cosmo Leone (5th of 17 in his), and Brent Ruther (6th of 35 in his). Below is pictured Gary Szymula, Dawn Pulford, Carrie Kimpton, and Cosmo Leone after the race.

Gabe Martinez did the USMC Ultimate Challenge Mud Run in South Carolina on September 22. He came in 3rd in his military division.
Eleven BEASTS ran the Quad Cities Half Marathon on September 23. Brad Dameron came in 3rd of 57 in his group (in his 1st half marathon). Josh Long came in 5th of 64 in his group, and 9th of 1014 overall with a great time of 1:21:07. Ann Lehman came in 15th of 77 in her group.
At the same time, Kevin Brueck ran the Quad Cities Marathon. His time of 2:52:54(!) earned him 2nd of 50 in his group, 12th of 413 males, and qualified him for Boston.
Kevin then came in 1st in his group at the JDRF 5K Run on September 29. Bob Ensminger came in 1st in his group too.
Kevin needed more. He decided to come in 1st in his group at the Steve Goff Memorial 5K Cross Country Run on September 30. Keep in mind, Kevin had these three great performances in a two week period.
On October 7, six BEASTS had a day they won't soon forget as they attempted the Chicago Marathon, which was cancelled due to the heat (87 degrees) and fraught with controversy afterwards. Kudos to Chris Grimm for posting a time of 4:37:39 in that miserable weather. Others completing the race included Ann Lehman, Richard Link, Dave Luers, Lori Rudy, and Christy Fox.
Our own Superman Lyle Roberts came in 3rd in his group at the 2007 Ironman International Championships on October 13 in Kona, Hawaii. His time was 15 hours, 58 minutes, and 46 seconds. We salute you Lyle. A real inspiration.
On October 20, Dawn Pulford was the 1st female to cross the line at the Stella Turnbull Fundraiser 5K.
A whopping 20 BEASTS entered the Danville Harvest Moon 5K Run on October 20. Probably this was to see Dave Luers dress in drag, which he did due to having lost a bet. Kevin Brueck was 1st overall at this race, besting Josh Long by 13 seconds who came in 2nd. Richard Link and Norma Cabanas came in 2nd in their groups, and Lynda Murray and Julie Rowan 1st in their groups.
To make up for the Chicago Marathon, Dave Luers and Lori Rudy ran another marathon, the Des Moines Marathon, on October 21. Carl Behne joined them.
Josh Long came in 2nd in his group in the CBRC Pumpkin Dash 8K on October 21.
Thirteen BEASTS ran in the Governor's Cup European Cross Country Run on November 4, but there appears to be no results data for this race. Kevin, Brad, and Dawn ran it. We can assume they placed high...
Jude Langhurst was 1st in her group at the Legends of the Fall Cross Country Trail Run (4 miles) on November 22.
August 23, 2007: LOTS have happened this summer, and there is no chance that we'll be able to list all the BEAST accomplishments. However, we'll try to hit some highlights.
First, the second Lake Geode Challenge, held on July 14th, was a great success! Team BEAST ran the event, lead by race director Kim, volunteer director Lori, and a slew of hard-working volunteers. On a beautiful sunny day, there were 119 finishers. Jason Maurice of Fairfield was the winner with a time of 2:06:54. Sarah Grunner of Wheaton was the first female finisher with a time of 2:26:12. BEAST highlights include Brad Dameron finishing 2nd in his age group and Carrie Kimpton placing 2nd in her group. The fastest team, made up of BEAST Bob Ensminger, Doug Martin, and Chris Kipp finished in 2:12:48. The fastest all-female team of BEAST Kandy Dameron, BEAST Karen Taylor, and Jennifer Hellman finished in a time of 3:05:31. Son of BEAST Braydon Rudy was the fastest swimmer, edging out Brent Ruther who was 2nd. Several other BEASTS had great times and placing.
Many BEASTS this summer completed their first triathlons. This includes Kendra, only 10 years old, who placed first (in her age group) in the TriJesus Youth Triathlon in Quincy Illinois on June 9, and second in the Steventon's Kids Triathlon in Bettendorf Iowa on June 30th. Congratulations! Others who completed their first triathlon include Susan Denk, Tim Smith, Sean Vostatek, Gary Szymula, Carl Behne, Sean Peterson, Andy Kincaid, Robin Conrad, John McCormick, Christy Fox, Deborah, Tygrett, Richard Link, and Rob VanPelt.
Lyle Roberts continued his amazing winning ways on June 24 at the Iron Man 70.3 Buffalo Springs Lake in Lubbock Texas. He placed first, qualifying him for the Ironman Worlds again. Congrats!!
Other summer accomplishments that stand out:
June 5, 2007: Hats off to some helpful BEASTS (and I know I'll leave some out). George and Mike lead a bike training session outdoors about a month ago. John and Angela lead an open water swim session a week ago. Bobby E has allowed us to come swim at the lake where his father lives, on Monday nights. Also, a few BEASTS met at the June 2 Burlington Bees baseball game for the "June Social" event.
June 3, 2007: Lots of BEASTS entered the Pigman Sprint Triathlon in Palo, IA. This included a 500 meter swim, 15.5 mile bike ride, and 5K run. Brad Dameron was the fastest male BEAST with a time of 1:15:17. Carrie Kimpton lead the female BEASTS with a time of 1:24:54. Also competing were Brent Ruther, Gabe Martinez, Shawn Mears, Dave Luers, Dawn Pulford, Lori Rudy, Lyle Roberts (1st in his age group), and Susan Denk. This was Susan's first triathlon and we're all proud of her. She wrote up a great article in The Hawkeye about the race.
June 2, 2007: Linda Murray did the 20K Dam-to-Dam Distance Classic in Des Moines, Iowa. She placed 4th of 128 in her age group with a 7:56 pace! Great job.

Leading the way was Josh Long, placing 3rd in his age group. Other finishers included Dave Luers, Rick Buller, Lori Rudy (fastest female BEAST), and Karen Taylor.
May 26, 2007: Snake Alley Criterium. Shawn Mears did the Cobble Climb, placing 3rd overall. Nick Moraniec placed 2nd overall. Nick also placed 6th in his age group in the Criterium itself. Hey, we need to get Nick to become a regular BEAST!
May 25, 2007: Wapello to Burlington Bike Race, 33 miles. A number of BEASTS (and friends) entered this, including Mike Hunter, Gabe Martinez (highest placing BEAST at 18th place), Shawn Mears, Carl Behne, Andy Kincaid, Gary Szymula, Nick Moraniec, and Chris Kipp. Chris sustained a nasty accident and wound up with some broken bones. Heal well, Chris!
May 22, 2007: Training update: Some of us are still meeting three days per week to run: 6am Monday, 5:30am Wednesday, and 8am Sunday. Meet at the YMCA. Also, many BEASTS are cycling now, often with Bike Burlington. Meet at Bickel's Bike Shop at 5:30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Go here for more details on the Wednesday night Dinner Rides.
May 19, 2007: A ton of BEASTS entered Burlington's 6 mile Great River Bridge Run. People who ran are listed below:
Congrats to all those Bridge Run finishers! And here are some of them:

May 12, 2007: Check out the great picture of many BEASTS taken on the recent Bike Fleche.

What a good-looking bunch!
Lots of BEASTS have been racing lately. Here are some more recent results:
April 21, 2007 Many BEASTS gathered at Bickel's Cycling and Fitness in West Burlington for a clinic lead by Nick and Tyler, who showed us how to maintain our bikes and change a flat on the road. Very useful. Thanks guys!
April 10, 2007 The fundraiser at Diamond Dave's was a big success. About $550 was raised for the BEAST Youth Program through food receipts, a raffle, and an auction. We all had a lot of fun. Thanks to the Cosmo and the other organizers and helpers and eaters, and Diamond Dave's, for a job well done! Special thanks to, to Gary for winning $75, and then donating it right back to the club!
Coming March 25, 2007 The Team BEAST “Try the Tri” Youth Triathlon Clinic is coming to the Burlington Community YMCA/YWCA. It starts at 4:00pm and costs only $5.00. Kids will learn about the swim, bike, run, and transition. More information here. If you cannot access that, call the YMCA at 319-753-6734 for more information. It'll be fun!
Update: The Try the Tri was a HUGE success. There were 22 youth attendees, and they overwhelmingly had a great time. It was impressive that on our first attempt, there were no hitches and everything went smoothly. Each kid left with some training on swimming, biking, running, transition, a bike helmet and other goodies.
March 4, 2007 John McCormick did the Cornbelt Running Club's Chili Chase in Davenport. Congratulations!
March 1, 2007 Lynda Graham-Murray gave a talk on nutrition. BEASTS gave it high marks.
Feb 3, 2007 Dave Luers bravely tackled the B-rrry Scurry in Clinton, Iowa. He ran 4 miles in at a very respectable 8:12 pace in subzero temperatures! With his time of 32:48, he finished in the top half of his age group. Congrats Dave!
Jan 28, 2007 Congratulations to a bunch of BEASTS (and friends) who took a trip to Kansas City for the "Cave Run" (Children's TLC Easter Seals Groundhog Run). Lots of fun, and good friendship, good food, and good running. Participants were
